Organisers hope to replicate the success of the 2005 Make Poverty History project in their new undertaking – Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign. The mission, being put together by charities and faith groups, aspires to help feed people in developing countries, by getting into the root of the hunger problem: land grabs, tax avoidance and a lack of transparency from those investing in poorer countries.
Whilst the other half of the world lives in hunger, the other is seeing a growth in food wastage. At the 2013 World Economic Forum in Davos, the current imbalance in world food production and consumption was addressed in A New Vision for Agriculture – a report that highlights the world's 500 million smallholders, who support 2 billion people and comprise 97% of the global agricultural holdings. They produce food for almost 70% of the world's population.
This report follows hot on the heels of a study from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE), saying that almost half of the world's food goes to waste. Western consumer demand for cosmetically perfect food, along with "poor engineering and agricultural practices,” inadequate infrastructure and poor storage facilities were cited as reasons for this waste.
Project Abroad is accepting volunteers to the help farmers and food producers in countries like Ghana and South Africa where sustainable agricultural systems require development. Project Abroad established in 1992, helps set up volunteer projects and has already assisted 50,000 volunteers achieve their goals of working with poor communities.
