Research could ease global food demand

Source:ringier Release Date:2013-05-28 182
COLLECTIVE research by 12 leading plant biologists may have impact on global agriculture. New discoveries of the way plants transport important substances across their biological membranes to resist toxic metals and pests, increase salt and drought tolerance, control water loss, and store sugar can have profound implications for increasing the supply of food and energy. The application of their findings which are documented in the journal Nature, could help the world meet its demand for food and fuel as the global population grows from 7 billion people to an estimated 9 billion by 2050.
