In the Beat the Banana! charity run, runners chase a life-sized banana with the aim of beating it across the finish line and raising millions to fund cancer research

HONG KONG – Over 2,000 avid runners and walkers took part in the 9th Beat the Banana! Charity Run organised by World Cancer Research Fund Hong Kong (WCRF HK). This year’s event, which took place Sunday, included the 5km Elite Run, 3km Fun Run led by the first-ever “Banana Lady”, and the WCRF HK-WELLCOME 1km Kids Banana Run.

For the third consecutive year supermarket retailer Wellcome supported the charity run, which has promoted the importance of an active lifestyle for cancer prevention since 2006, and has seen over 11,000 participants enjoy the thrill of chasing a life-sized “banana” along Hong Kong’s iconic waterfront.
Beat the Banana! 2014This year, a record-breaking 2,039 runners, aged from 8 months to 72 years, took part in the run and raised over HK$2.2 million to fund cancer research and education programmes. The charity welcomes any further donation in support of the event from the public by 17 March 2014.
“Some people may think preventing cancer would be difficult, but that’s not true. You can actually lower your risk by eating healthily, being physically active, and by maintaining a healthy weight. In other words, eat well, move more and stay lean. This is what you need to do.” says Karen Sadler, WCRF HK Development director, Asia.

WCRF HK is part of the global network of charities dedicated to the prevention of cancer. The WCRF global network is led and unified by WCRF International, a membership association which operates as the umbrella organisation for the network. The other charities in the WCRF network are American Institute for Cancer Research in the US; World Cancer Research Fund UK; and Wereld Kanker Onderzoek Fonds in the Netherlands. Air Jordan 30.5 Shoes
