NEARLY non-existent in the sub-Saharan African market, mushrooms are a potential source of livelihood and nutrient-rich food for Rwandese. The ministry of agriculture of Rwanda is working with Kigali Farms to help get production started. The company has been identifying locations ideal for mushroom farming and is preparing to orient interested Rwandese on the cultivation and consumption of a variety of mushrooms.
“Mushrooms are a quality market that should be exploited,” said the Hon. Minister Dr Agnes Kalibata. Mushrooms grown in Rwanda may be easily accepted in markets across borders, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
