SABIC has been awarded the National 2011 Best Safety Management Award by the Thai Ministry of Labour. This is the seventh consecutive year that SABIC has received the award, in recognition of its world-class Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) practices at its manufacturing site in Rayong, Thailand. The award was presented to SABIC by His Excellency Phadermchai Sasomsub, Minister for Labour, Thailand, at a formal awards ceremony in Bangkok on 5 July during the National Safety Week. Winning the award for the seventh time reflects the company’s continued commitment to excellence in safety and health for its employees and the communities in which it operates.
Since plant operations began at Rayong in 2000, SABIC has made continuous improvements to better its EHSS records, as benchmarked against key players in the industry. The plant has a staff strength of over 80 and produces 30,000 metric tonnes of engineering plastics annually for diverse industries such as electrical and electronics, automotive, and medical and appliances.
SABIC has built a culture of excellence in safety through management commitment and EHSS policy deployment, carefully executed throughout the organization by employees and contractors. This is a key contributing factor for repeated wins of the award over the years. “We have been able to excel consistently in our EHSS standards because of the personal commitment from each of our employees and contractors,” said Sarun Sungkatavat, Country Leader, Thailand. “Our employees have truly lived out the SABIC brand by thoughtfulness and care for the safety of fellow workers.”
Globally, SABIC has deployed an EHSS management system called Safety Health and Environmental Management Standard (SHEMS). SHEMS provides systematic standards and guidance for all SABIC facilities to manage process safety, environment, health, occupational safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
In Thailand, the SABIC EHSS team proactively works to drive education and training programs to ensure that employees and contractors undergo 15,000 hours of EHSS training per year to keep updated on best practices. Additionally, SABIC has also implemented safety measures and programs that go beyond regulations in Thailand, such as its Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) Program, Lockout Tagout (LOTO) Program, Contractor Management Program, EHS Concern Reporting, and rewards & recognitions programs, to better train and inspire employees to reach higher safety standards at the workplace.
SABIC has also been awarded a Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Silver Award 2012 by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower in recognition of the company’s efforts in maintaining world-class Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) standards in its Singapore operations. This is the third time that SABIC Singapore has received the WSH Silver Award.
