SABIC's innovative solutions for improved quality of life in China

Source:Ringier Plastics Release Date:2015-05-22 164
Plastics & Rubber
SABIC exhibit centers on its synthetic rubber, certified renewable polyolefins, healthcare grades, phthalate-free non-woven fabrics  and HDPE portfolios.

SABIC exhibits its range of innovative and sustainable solutions for the China market at Chinaplas 2015. The solutions represent the company’s ongoing commitment to driving and delivering innovation based on its deep understanding of latest market trends and needs.

“Demand for cleaner energy and waste-efficient sustainable solutions is at an all-time high in China as a result of heightened consumer awareness and the strain on natural resources brought on by rapid urbanization,” according to Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, Executive Vice President, SABIC’s Polymers business. “At SABIC, we are focused on helping customers find the right answers to meet safety and sustainable requirements. For instance, we work closely with customers to identify critical issues such as healthcare packaging and develop solutions to stay ahead of stringent safety standards and regulations set by the industry.”

SABIC will be launching its multibillion Synthetic Rubber Project in Saudi Arabia and starting the production of BR, EPDM, POE product in its plant. SABIC’s Synthetic Rubber will meet emerging demands from transportation building/construction and other industrial sectors in China and the rest of Asia.

SABIC is also the first petrochemicals company to produce renewable polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) based on second generation renewable feedstock, which, while using a totally renewable feedstock made from waste fats and oils, are not in competition with the food chain. This was in response to the increasing demand for sustainable materials from customers, most notably in the packaging industry, and is applicable for all its polyolefins grades, potentially for all market applications.

The company also introduced two phthalate-free, spun bond non-woven products PP511A & PP519A which will help manufacturers meet regulation restrictions of phthalate in their applications. Used in hygiene fabric products such as baby diapers, adult incontinence, feminine care, and surgical garments and drapes, both grades offer excellent process efficiency, with low breakage and waste. It takes less of the new grades to provide the same strength and mechanical properties, thus reducing the energy needed for their manufacture.

SABIC PCGR08T Medical Grade for IV Bottles

In China, regulations related to medical and pharmaceutics packaging have also become more stringent to meet the demands of compliance with international pharmaceutical safety and reliability standards. New additions to SABIC’s dedicated healthcare polyolefin portfolio LDPE PCG06 for use in semi-rigid plastic bottles obtained from the Blown Fill Seal (BFS) process & PP PCGR08T for IV bottles application, will not only help improve confidence in the supply chain but can also offer potential improvements in barrier properties, such as permeability to oxygen and water vapour. This in turn can help optimize preservation of the efficacy and integrity of the drug product during its shelf-life, which can lead to improved safety of medicine usage.

With a larger global manufacturing output, growing consumer spending on packaged goods and urban populations globally and especially in emerging countries such as China and India, the rigid packaging industry is experiencing increasing demand. It is therefore evolving to meet these demands with packagers looking for materials that require less energy and weight, and are more easily recyclable and environmentally friendly. To address these needs, SABIC has expanded its HDPE blow molding portfolio with multimodal extrusion blow molding grades which are produced using the innovative Advanced Cascade Process (ACP) technology. The clear benefits of adopting SABIC’s new, sustainable High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) blow molding solutions have been proven where manufacturers can achieve significant cost savings through improved energy efficiency and down gauging opportunities.  These three new multi-modal extrusion blow molding grades - SABIC HDPE B5822, SABIC HDPE B1054, and SABIC HDPE B5403 - covers a vast range of potential blow molding applications such as small blow molded household and industrial materials containers (<10L), standard and UN jerry cans, as well as drums (tight head and open head) up to 220L for the packaging of food and non-food items, as well as aggressive chemicals.
