S.Africa's manufacturing up 7 percent y/y in April

South Africa's manufacturing output rose 7 percent year-on-year in volume terms in April - far outpacing market expectations - after contracting 2.2 percent in March, Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday.

On a month-on-month basis, factory production was up 8.4 percent, but fell 1.9 percent in the three months to April compared with the preceding period.

Economists polled by Reuters had predicted year-on-year growth of 1.2 percent in the sector, which accounts for about 15 percent of gross domestic product.
