Salt reduction activist focus on stroke prevention

Source:Ringier Release Date:2012-02-27 182

STROKE kills 3 million women and 2.5 million men worldwide every year. Salt is the major factor that raises blood pressure, and high blood pressure is the single most important risk factor for stroke. That's why this year World Salt Awareness Week 2012 (26th March - 1st April) will focus on salt reduction and the prevention of stroke.

In Australia, where stroke is the second largest cause of death, Australian Division of World Action on Salt and Health (AWASH) is working with the National Stroke Foundation to organise a range of activities and events during the week including:
? Salt and Stroke Seminar in Melbourne on Monday, March 26th
? Salt and Stroke Seminar in Sydney on Wednesday March 28th
? Educational programme to be delivered by the National Stroke Foundation volunteers

The George Institute will also launch new research on salt levels in foods. Further details available at AWASH (www.awash.org.au).
