Samsung unit to manufacture Roche biologic medicines

SEOUL – Korea’s Samsung BioLogics, announced late Tuesday that it has entered into a long term strategic manufacturing agreement with F. Hoffmann-La Roche, the Swiss global healthcare company. 

Under the agreement, the Korean contract process developer and cGMP manufacturer will produce Roche's proprietary commercial biologic medicines at its two manufacturing facilities in Incheon, South Korea, of which one is currently under construction.

Terms of the agreement will not be disclosed, including financial terms and products to be manufactured, Samsung said.

Biologic medicines are large molecules that are created by biological processes, rather than being chemically synthesised, and are typically administered via injection or intravenously.

Samsung BioLogics facilities are custom-designed for monoclonal antibody and recombinant protein production. The company’s services include cell line generation, process and analytical method development, analytical services, clinical and commercial bulk cGMP manufacturing of drug substance and drug product meeting the highest standards of quality and global regulatory compliance.

Roche is a world leader in biologic medicine manufacturing, with long-standing expertise in biotech manufacturing and has the largest biotech production capacity of any company worldwide.
