WHEN healthy habits are taught early to children, they tend to keep these habits as they grow older. The Saudi Diabetes Society sees the urgency of educating children on eating nutritious food and being active, given the rising number of young people diagnosed as overweight or obese.
The organisation launched the campaign at schools, informing students on proper eating habits and the necessity of regular exercise, and encouraging teachers, parents and school administrators to lead healthier lifestyles as well.
The Arab News reported that Kamil Salama, secretary-general of the Saudi Diabetes Society, has said that his organisation will provide information on the importance of controlling weight and blood sugar levels, and will see to it that school canteens will offer nutritious foods. Emphasis was given on low sodium intake and avoiding sodas and fatty foods in favour of high-fibre foods and low-fat dairy products.
