Heading the line-up of FARO’s most popular 3D measurement and documentation systems showcased during the recent METALEX in Bangkok is the FARO? Edge ScanArm ES with Enhanced Scanning Technology (EST). In an interview conducted by International Metalworking News for Asia (IMNA), FARO’s Country Manager (SEA & India) Mr Hakiran Sandhu talked about the new product, gives an update on the Thai market, and shares some thoughts about the country.
EST is the combination of multiple hardware and software improvements designed to boost performance by improving the ability to scan challenging surfaces. Materials with dark or reflective optical qualities can now be scanned with less effort and without the need for sprays or surface coatings.
New and improved filtering algorithms automatically adjust and optimise the scanning parameters for plastic, metal, or a variety of surface finishes and colours. The new HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode of the ScanArm ES lets users scan materials with contrasting colours (i.e. black and white) simultaneously.
Combining the Laser Line probe with the flexibility of the FaroArm, the ScanArm ES packs a big punch in a small portable form, with an excellent price-to-performance value to boot. It is the suitable tool for product development, inspection, and quality control. In addition, the device offers capabilities such as point cloud comparison with CAD, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, and 3D modelling.
IMNA: Tell us a little bit more about the new FARO Edge ScanArm ES. Is this designed for the Asian market?
Sandhu: The FARO? Edge ScanArm ES was launched just a few months ago and it's making its maiden appearance here in Southeast Asia at METALEX. It's a combination of milestone hardware and software improvements that gives users the enhanced scanning technology (EST), which is designed to boost performance for scanning of challenging surfaces that could not be done in the past. Examples of such scenarios would be dark, reflective or shiny surfaces. Previously, customers would need to use a spray or some sort of coating before scanning was possible. But with this new technology, we have eliminated the need for that and the system requires less effort for users to get things done.
The Edge ScanArm is designed for applications such as product development, inspection, and quality control, as well as point cloud comparison with CAD, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, and 3D modelling. And the main industries that would find the Edge ScanArm useful include metal fabrication, mould, tool and die, and especially for Thailand – the automotive industry. We expect it to be a sensation, because they would experience greater benefits with this new system.
IMNA: Have you started producing your equipment here in Thailand?
Sandhu: In order to streamline operations and to maintain product quality consistency, the company co-locates the product development, research and development, as well as manufacturing functions according to product lines. At present, these teams are located in the U.S. and Europe, and there are no immediate plans for FARO to move these functions into other countries.
