MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – IntraPace has developed the abiliti system, an implantable gastric stimulator for hunger management, designed for obese patients with a BMI between 35 and 55 as an alternative to existing weight loss options.
Aside from gastric stimulation, the abiliti system has some additional activity and stomach monitoring features. It is implanted using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The technology is designed to minimize hunger sensation while trying to encourage longer-term, sustainable weight loss habits. The system also communicates with ‘my.abiliti’, an online portal for reviewing food consumption and activity levels and share this with peers.
The implanted abiliti system detects when a person consumes food or drinks. Upon detection, the system delivers a series of low-energy electrical impulses to the stomach to induce a feeling of fullness. These electrical impulses are customized depending on individual patient needs. Patient actiity levels are also tracked, providing a comprehensive view of food consumption and exercise trends.
IntraPace has received CE marking for the abiliti system in England, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany in 2011. The Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve the device in the US.
