DESIGNED for use with its latest vision systems, In-Sight, Cognex Corporation has introduced the Cognex Directory Server (CDS) software version 1.0. According to the company, this software consolidates authorisation and authentication control for all users, as part of the overall enterprise information security architecture.
“Network security is a critical topic in the factory automation industry as more plants leverage the flexibility and openness of Ethernet for their core manufacturing backbone,” explained Herb Lade, vice president and business unit manager. “Ethernet-enabled control systems allow for seamless integration into ERP green light that it is safe to start weighing. Warnings are shown in yellow, with errors in red. The user has the security of knowing that all acquired weighing results meet pre-defined process requirements and hence also the relevant regulations.
RFID tags for better process security
By fixing SmartSample? RFID tags to titration beakers, sample information entered at the balance can be securely transferred to the Titration Autosampler developed by Mettler Toledo. The RFID-tagged pipettes can also be scanned at the balance via the EasyScan? to check calibration and test dates. It guarantees that the pipettes are valid for use. Test dates on the tag can be updated when the pipette check is carried out using the built-in balance application. The new RFID capabilities not only eliminate transcription error but also offer users a higher level of process security.
A paperless lab
The new balances are fully compatible with the company’s LabX laboratory software which guarantees process security and manages measurement uncertainty. Full traceability is assured by the flexible Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) user guidance on the balance touchscreen, automatic calculations and comprehensive data handling. The LabX attains high process security requirements and, with all data stored securely in a central database, supports the move towards establishing a paperless lab.
“Laboratories are facing increased pressure to comply with industry regulations such as United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapter 41 and Good Manufacturing Practice, to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), reduce total cost of ownership and increase profit margins,” said Simon Taylor, product manager for the Excellence analytical balances. “In conjunction with our customers, we have designed a new line of analytical balances to ensure end-result accuracy and compliance. Through streamlining processes these balances will enhance laboratory efficiencies and reduce operational overheads, such as operator time.”
