American probiotics manufacturer Ganeden Biotech and British health and hygiene consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser have announced the results of a study that confirms the function of the former’s trademarked GanedenBC30 probiotic, which is in supporting digestive and immune health in healthy seniors.
Done at the University of Reading in England, the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study involved subjects from a healthy senior population, GanedenBC30 was found to support digestive and immune health with increased healthy bacteria in the gut and improved immune markers.
Senior author of the study Glenn Gibson said: "When you are younger, you have a healthier balance of good and bad bacteria. As people age this balance shifts, and often the bad bacteria in the gut increases. In addition, people begin to experience more gastro-intestinal (GI) issues, along with changes in immune function as the majority of your immune cells are in the gut." Mr Gibson is professor of food microbial sciences at the University of Reading and president and founding member of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics.
The probiotics industry is looking at the huge implications of these findings for the population of individuals over 65 that is growing at the fastest rate in history—an American turns 65 every 13 seconds whilst approximately 10,000 baby boomers retire every day.
Ganeden Biotech, Inc. is a privately held consumer healthcare company based in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, USA.
