Sustainable future through plastics

The importance of building a sustainable future through proper management of available resources, recycling and use of energysaving solutions takes centre stage at this year’s CHINAPLAS. The durability and versatility of plastics, aside from its light weight feature, can make significant contributions towards achieving sustainability.

These are very much evident in the popularity of lightweight vehicles aimed at reducing fossil fuel energy consumption aside from minimising carbon emissions. Plastic packaging products have also been concentrating in safety and protection, like keeping foods in transit fresh and preventing spoilage. In the construction and building sector, innovative plastic insulation reduces energy consumption in homes and buildings.

As energy and resources become scarce, plastics and rubber professionals have focused their attention in ensuring that businesses operate cost-efficiently and in line with efforts to protect the environment.As a result, advanced technologies and industrial processes promising reduced impact on the environment, otherwise called “green technologies,” are expected to lead the way a more sustainable future.

“Green innovations” as the way to go

The world’s second biggest exhibition and Asia’s leading trade event, CHINAPLAS has taken on a more direct agenda to meet increasing demand for more sustainable business practices. CHINAPLAS 2014 will promote sustainability under the theme of "Greenovation – Solution to Sustainability", with "The City of Tomorrow" and "Green Conference" as two featured events at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from 23 – 26 April 2014. This year’s edition has more than 2,900 exhibitors with expected 120,000 professional visitors. Fourteen international pavilions will be showcased, and more than 3,200 sets of machineries will have their on-floor demonstrations.

The highlight of CHINAPLAS 2014 is the “City of Tomorrow,” which presents a comprehensive sustainability model that covers various aspects of the manufacturing cycle. Embedded with enormous fun elements such as attractive display of exhibits, info boards and interactive games in different clusters of the model, participants will be impressed by the innovative and interesting green messages and sustainability trends.

"The City of Tomorrow" will feature a circular shape structure at Central Square of the exhibition centre to showcase a comprehensive sustainability model which covers the sustainability concept in four aspects, namely Green and Alternative Raw Materials, Energyefficient Machinery, Plastics and Rubber Applications, and Recycling. Visitors can explore the latest green messages and trends from manufacturing till the end of the life of the products through interactive displays and game booths in a fun and relaxing manner.

The Green Conference is a two-day conference to be held on 24 – 25 April. The conference sessions will cover "Innovative Solutions for Plastic Recycling" and "Green Molding to Halve the Cost and Double the Wealth" respectively. The conference will highlight a range of forward-thinking topics such as green moulding, 3D printing, plastics recycling as well as various solutions for end-of-life plastic wastes.
