Top prizes for hybrid injection machine
Two top TaipeiPlas prizes went to Fu Chun Shin (FCS) for its HT150-SV system: the 'Excellence Prize' for the machine's hybrid energy-saving system and reduced footprint, and the plastics trade fair's first-ever 'Industrial Design Award', which recognises aesthetics in product design. The servo power-saving injection moulding machine uses a Delta hybrid system that provides better control of each movement but also power savings of over 50%, or comparable to a fully electric system. Moreover, the system's ability to eliminate contamination and improve texture fidelity of PMMA – a thermoplastic that can be brittle when handled poorly – won it the top award.
FCS focuses on material parameters to remain competitive. “Having a better understanding of how the material performs leads to better technology development and machinery design," said John Hsieh, an area manager at FCS. “For instance, to create products from PMMA of excellent crystalline character, we customised the injection to enhance the clarity and prevent yellow tones comment to products made from this kind of material." The machine will be a Taiwan entry in the product design category of the iF (International Forum Design) awards 2013, and will take part in the qualifying sessions this November in Germany.

Standout multilayer film line
It wasn't the only co-extrusion blown film machine at the show, the JC-3CX from Jenn Chong stood out owing to its more finished look. And in this case, the machine – a 3-layer film line for high-clarity PE requirements of various industries went beyond its looks to win first prize in the Plastic Extrusion category. “We changed the in-line design to increase the efficiency through the use of servomotors and upgraded the auto-airing system,"explained general manager Tony Wang. The system has been streamlined from a 3-deck to a 2-deck configuration and keeping the same height, which translates to 25% savings on material costs, he added. “Several prospective buyers have expressed interest in the system. The price is about $700,000, including the automation system, and [the sale] is currently under negotiation,"Mr Wang admitted.

Special PLA for demanding applications
Aplus Molds & Plastics Co., Ltd. is an OEM firm specialising in mould manufacturing and injection moulding. It is their fourth time in TaipeiPlas. The company introduced as their main products their special PLA and plastic barrier for roads. Manager Ronny Sun stated that their PLA is qualitatively different from conventional PLA, with higher endurance to temperature. The conventional PLA could only bare 90°C but the PLA material could withstand 120°C, which makes it more applicable in food applications. Also, it is eco-friendly because the PLA could be decomposed within one month when mixed with soil. Faced with price-cutting competitors, the company improved their quality in many aspects. Mr. Sun expects that the expansion in the next few years could go beyond the limit.
