Taiwan-China and Taiwan-Japan flights had performed the best of all flight services in 2012, and both routes could continue to be lucrative this year, China Airlines (CAL) said.
The China and Japan markets had contributed much to CAL's profitability last year, said Sun Hung-hsiang, chairman and president of Taiwan's largest air carrier. CAL has seen its passenger capacity increase by 12 percent in the cross-Taiwan Strait route thanks to the increasing number of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan, Chang said. Nearly 2.6 million Chinese nationals visited Taiwan in 2012, a year-on-year growth of 45 percent, according to the Transport Ministry. CAL also saw a growth of 24 percent in passenger capacity of its Northeast Asian market, most of which could be attributed to the increased Taiwan-Japan flights. Sun said the carrier will continue to expand its flight network to the two countries by adding new destinations, including Takamatsu in Japan and Urumqi and Weihai in China.
