In a quadrennial technology conference, Minister Cyrus C. Y. Chu of National Science Council quoted Academician H. T. Kung of Academia Sinica: “We almost did nothing”. This pointed out the core issue in Taiwan, that is, academic resources and industry are not integrated. The main topic of this conference was about how to help technology transformation in Taiwan. The field encompassed academic research, intellectual property arrangement, upstream academic research, and the downstream market application. As proclaimed by many, several academic schools in Taiwan are expected to pay more attention to their social responsibilities on practical industrial applications, or else people in private firms would only face more and more tough challenges.
H. T. Kung said that during the last decade, there were many technological breakthroughs in ICT. These breakthroughs happened in downstream market, such as cloud computing, smart phone, smaller components, and many others. Most academics did not notice these important moments; the advantages Taiwanese hold will go away slowly. During 2012, both official and private organizations in Taiwan held many integration conferences and meetings in order to discuss ways to properly utilize resources on the application phase. Now is the time for them to act, or competitors will take more territories from them.
