Tehran scientists develop device to measure glucose levels in saliva

TEHRAN – A joint project by scientists from the Center of Excellence in Electrochemistry (CEE) at University of Tehran and the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences has successfully constructed and tested the prototype of a device for testing glucose levels in saliva.

Previous studies have established a proportional relationship between blood glucose levels and blood glucose levels of tears and saliva. Thus, these fluids can be an alternative and pain-free way of measuring glucose levels. The challenge in measuring glucose levels in saliva is the lower concentrations compared to blood (about 100 to 2000 times lower), which cannot be detected by conventional glucometers and other glucose testing methods.

The researcher’s first version of the device was launched and tested in March 2010. A second and third version was later developed. The detection limit of the device is 0.007 mg/dl with a wide and applicable linear range of glucose concentration. A prototype of the final version was launched and is in the final stage of testing. The team is eyeing a commercial version by the end of April 2013.Nike Zoom Kobe Shoes
