LIGHTWEIGHT and clear containers are used to present many food products like baby food and sauces in the retail market. In surveys, end-consumers are said to prefer seeing the contents of a product before making a purchase, and therefore clear packaging is a plus. But barrier protection is of course important.
The new jars developed by Total and RPC Promens Consumer Corby are made of multilayer PP/EVOH/PP and shaped using injection stretch bow molding technology. ISBM provides clarity and high gloss. Also lightweight, these plastic jars will help food retailers and brand owners meet their sustainability goals in packaging and CO2 emission reductions.

According to Total, it used a metallocene-based PP specially developed for ISBM technology. This material combined with ultra-low extractables will reduce overall migration, especially at high temperature conditions.
A new manufacturing process enables RPC to produce the multilayer containers with a highly-effective oxygen barrier that extends ambient shelf life. These containers withstand temperatures over 100°C for pasteurization and sterilization. The caps are also made with PP leading to a mono material pack for better recycling. Moving forward, the company will produce other jar sizes for the retail market.
