During the recent Manufacturing Indonesia, International Metalworking News for Asia conducted a booth interview and spoke to Mr. Tan Kiang Ling, Senior Regional Technology Manager (Software Consultant), Machine Tool Division of TRUMPF Asia Pacific, and Ms. Carina Albrecht, the Business Development and Marketing Manager of TRUMPF Asia Pacific.
TRUMPF is well-established in the Asia Pacific region. Aside from their regional headquarters in Singapore, the company has subsidiaries in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and is working with distribution partners in Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. In Indonesia, the company established PT TRUMPF Indonesia since 2009. It provides high-quality service personnel, after sales services, as well as spare parts management to support customers.
Ms Albrecht described TRUMPF as a high-tech company, providing manufacturing solutions in the fields of machine tools, lasers and electronic tools. These solutions are applied in the manufacture of the most diverse products, from vehicles, building technologies and mobile devices to state-of-the-art power and data storage. According to her, TRUMPF is a world leader in machine tools used in flexible sheet metal processing, and also for industrial lasers.
She further explained that the company is implementing the Industry 4.0 recommendation, a high-tech strategy of the German government. It promotes the computerization of manufacturing. At this year’s exhibition, TRUMPF has brought their latest and advanced technology innovation. Not only manufacturing machines and developing current technology, the company is introducing the future of manufacturing technology. They offer total solution to all sheet metal processing needs. As the customer produces more and more complex parts, and the technology gap has become smaller and smaller, the key to effective and efficient production is the software that can speed up the process and enable the machine to complete multiple and complex work in a short amount of time.
TruTops Boost
Mr. Tan then introduced the TruTops Boost, a unique software developed by TRUMPF which was launched in Europe last year. The updated version, 2.0, is now here in Asia. The software is used for designing and programming laser, punching and bending machines and increases performance at the touch of a button.
Further on, Mr Tan spoke of his observation among customers in the ASEAN market. He noticed that job shop owners nowadays are engaged in multiple projects at one time. And the software they use could only process few products concurrently. As a result, more time is spent programming for each project.
In introducing TruTops Boost, TRUMPF has revolutionized the world of sheet metal processing. This software merges all the steps, from the geometry to the finished NC program, into a single system.
TruTops Boost has two operating levels. The HomeZone control level is perfect for seeing all the orders on hand and preparing programs very quickly, in an automated process. Some specialists will want to exert greater influence and, for example, might intend to modify individual parameters in an order. The TecZone technology level was created for their use. The great advantage is that operators can use both levels simultaneously. This lets them program in TecZone while the software itself, under HomeZone control, automatically calculates additional NC programs in the background. This makes for an enormous increase in programming productivity. Mr. Tan explained that with this new TRUMPF software, the customers can now produce various jobs at the same time. This new software is based on an entirely new operating philosophy. A single system, working on the basis of the job order, handles the design, generates an unfolding, and prepares NC programs for 2D laser cutting, punching and bending.
When Mr. Tan demonstrated the TruTops Boost to the visitors during the exhibition, the audience were surprised and amazed with what the software can produce in such a short time. They admired the change in concept of the technology applied.
Research and Technology
In the era of rapid technological advances, a global company like TRUMPF must invest heavily in Research and Technology (R&D). Last year for instance, TRUMPF invested about US$200 million for this purpose. Aside from that, the company has also fostered long-term contacts with universities and research institutes in an effort to create a sustainable link between research and industry.
Mr. Tan explained that a significant percentage of their annual revenue is channeled to keep up with developing new technologies and solutions. Currently, the company is releasing more products, such as in panel bending machine as an addition to their product portfolio in Asia, and in laser welding technology which is now receiving a lot of interest in the market. On top of that, as their commitment to progress in many sectors of manufacturing industry, the company has presented their latest innovation in 3D Printer.
Ms. Albrecht mentioned that the company has exhibited many times before in the Manufacturing Indonesia exhibition. It is one of their tools to introduce new technologies, launch new products, attract new customers, as well as to build good relations within the manufacturing community in Indonesia. Other than that, the company also has a series of training and development courses and workshops provided to the customers. Mr. Tan mentioned that the following week after the exhibition, they will conduct a seminar for system programmers. They invited all programmers from their customers in general, who are the daily users of their system, to the seminar to keep them up to date with the latest TRUMPF technology.
