Uruguay’s shipments to the United Arab Emirates rose 125% in 2013 compared to the previous year, showing the UAE’s greater confidence in the quality of its food and beverage products. Products destined to the Emirates are citrus, fruit juice, butter, barley, rice and meat, which make up about 93% of shipments.
Food accounts for 47% of Uruguay’s industrial production, with nearly half of output exported to markets worldwide. Meat is one of the major exports, reaching some 100 countries. Uruguayan beef in particular is highly regarded for its taste.
At Gulfood 2014, companies from Uruguay introduced other products such as olive oil, chocolate powder, mutton, mineral water and alfajores (a Latin American confection). The country is stimulating interest in its olive oil products, as well as premium bottle mineral water.
