THE United Arab Emirates’ exports of bananas from the Philippines increased from $42.2 million in 2012 to $79 million in 2013, recording 87% growth in only a year. In an interview with Gulf News, Paisal Abdullah, Philippine commercial counsellor for the Middle East and Africa, said these figures exclude imports to other Gulf markets. Mr Abdullah moved from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Dubai, to help improve exports from the Philippines. He said that the UAE is a big market for Philippine bananas and has a capacity to import more. But in 2012, typhoon Bopha affected some plantations in Mindanao where bananas are mostly sourced, hence a dip in the figure.
