Shanghai Bacchus Limited Company becomes Veolia’s anaerobic technology reference in Chinese food and beverage market

SHANGHAI Bacchus Limited Company has partnered with Veolia Water Technologies China for the design and construction of full turnkey wastewater treatment plants for two of its greenfield factories in Tianjin and Chengdu, China.

Veolia will install several of its technologies, including Biothane® Advanced Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB), AnoxKaldnes™ Biological Activated Sludge™ (BAS), as well as tertiary and sludge treatments at these plants.

Once the projects are completed, Bacchus will have three production facilities (one is currently operating in Shanghai) that will increase capacity for its RIO® Alcopop series, a product that is enjoying growing demand in the domestic market.

To mitigate Bacchus’s wastewater challenges, both projects feature Veolia’s high-performing anaerobic reactor, the Biothane Advanced® UASB.

Wastewater generated from processing operations in the food and industry contains high concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids.

Renowned for its high organic loading capacity and superior sludge retention characteristics, the Biothane Advanced ® UASB reactor is particularly suitable for treatment of food and beverage-type effluents, ensuring that local regulatory standards for wastewater discharge are met. In addition, the compact solution supports biogas production, which serves as an alternate energy source, maximizing renewable energy utilization for Bacchus.

James Peng, Solutions Director, Veolia Water Technologies in China, concluded, “As a leading global provider of innovative water and wastewater solutions, Veolia’s knowledge of local discharge limits has benefitted our clients, whom have had to mitigate wastewater challenges in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. This is our first partnership with Bacchus in China. Our suite of water and wastewater solutions offers maximum technical advantages for our clients, and we look forward to recommending our anaerobic technologies to more Food & Beverage manufacturers operating in this region.”
