Tuna, along with tra fish (Pangasius), is one of Viet Nam’s major seafood exports, reaching more than 80 countries. The first five months of the year showed a significant jump in shipments for this product, specifically to Europe. Export turnover amounted to US$155 million, up by about 20% y-o-y.
According to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), demand from the European market increased during this period, after a long spell of importing only small amounts. In 2012, export value for tuna reached $570 million, with $245 million coming from the U.S. and $114 million from Europe.
Whilst the numbers are encouraging, trouble continues to brew in the industry. Local fish breeders are complaining about steep production costs which they say are higher than selling prices. Furthermore, they say bank loans are not easy to obtain, reports the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). To improve their plight, fish exporters are trained to use new farming methods and meet export standards. (Photo ? Piero Cruciatti | Dreamstime.com)
