VietnamPlas 2015, held in Ho Chi Minh City from September 16-19, 2015, celebrated its 15th year with a full house of exhibitors, an indication that the event doesn’t seem to be losing any of its industry appeal. If you were a Vietnamese plastics or rubber manufacturer in need of raw materials or machinery then VietnamPlas 2015 was certainly the place to be.
Exhibition’s organiser representative, Ms. Maki Sung, Project Executive of Yorkers Trade and Marketing Services, said that VietnamPlas 2015 is only the second year the exhibition has been in its present form. Prior to 2014, the event used to incorporate packaging and printing but started to outgrow the exhibition centre so the organisers made the decision to separate the two shows into specialised areas, which by all accounts was a successful decision.

This year’s exhibition attracted some 300 exhibitors from 10 countries, as well as some Vietnamese companies. With the exhibition organiser’s being Taiwan/Hong Kong based company, it’s no surprise that the large percentage of overseas exhibitors came from China and Taiwan. One notable exception to this Asian dominated event, and a new comer to Vietnam, was the Iranian based petrochemical company JAM PC, one of the country’s largest producers/suppliers of polymers and liquid gas.
According to Ms. Sung the exhibitor breakdown at this year’s VietnamPlas was around 25% plastic and rubber machines, 11% injection moulding machines, 22% plastic and raw material suppliers, with the rest being made up of extruders, auxiliary equipment, moulds and dies. Exhibitions such as VietnamPlas could not be possible without industry and government support, and VietnamPlas certainly received support from leading associations. Ms. Sung pointed out that the Vietnam Plastics Association and the Vietnam Rubber Association have been long term partners with VietnamPlas and provide a great deal of support, industry training and networking opportunities. The Vietnamese government is also very aware of the assistance such exhibitions as VietnamPlas contributes to industry growth and has always supported the organisers’ efforts since the exhibition started some 15 years ago.

JAM PC is one of the largest producers of olefin and polypropylene in the Middle East, and is Iran’s leading non-oil product exporter and Polypropylene manufacturer. Mr. Javad Mahdavi, JAM PC Head of Sales Division, said that this was the first time the company has ventured into Vietnam, and is quite excited about doing some serious business here. Mr. Mahdavi went on to say that Vietnam has an amazing potential for the company’s products as the country’s plastics industry has been showing a steady annual growth of around 20%. And as the Vietnam is almost totally reliant on imported plastics raw materials, “we can see a bright future for the company here,” Mr. Mahdavi stressed.
Jam PC had spared no expense with their launch into Vietnam as it boasted not only one of the largest stands at the exhibition, but two stands, and indication of its commitment to a successful market entry. JAM PC offers an array of products on offer such as LLDPE, HDPE, and olefin products. Mr. Mahdavi said that the Middle East figures prominently in the supply of raw materials to Vietnam and JAM PC is looking forward to securing a good market share over the coming years.

Recycling has always been seen as the “poorer cousin” of the plastics industry in Vietnam, with majority of manufacturers opting to use new raw materials as opposed to using the perceived lesser quality recycled products. However, recycled raw materials are slowly becoming a viable option for manufacturers, particularly in the area of export. One of the few European companies exhibiting at this year’s VietnamPlas was Dutch based recyclers CELLPAP, and the company offers quite a unique business. CELLPAP gather plastics waste from various countries in Europe; packages it, then sells it to recycling companies in Europe as well as to countries like China and Vietnam. From there the local plastics recycler will then convert it back into raw plastics material to be sold domestically or for export back to the country of origin.
Mr. Bob van Toledo, CELLPAP’s Director of Trade Plastics Waste, said that although Vietnam manufacturers are not great lovers of recycled raw materials, this attitude is slowly changing. He went on to say that there are so many different types of plastics products being manufactured, and some of them need the quality assurance that comes with using new raw materials. However, there‘s also a great deal of products such as bins and other household goods, garden and construction products where recycles materials are more than appropriate for the use.

Developing the relationship with the customer to fully understand their needs is an integral part of CMS corporate strategy. “We don’t just sell machines, but the whole customer service package,” according to Mr. Delachi. He added that the company’s machines are quite high end in their price, but “we’re also very aggressive with our pricing as we are a very streamlined company without a huge amount of operating costs, so there’s always room to move on price, which also gives us a competitive edge,” he explained.
