Virtual Dissection

Source:ringier Release Date:2012-11-21 286

VIRTUAL cadavers. How does that strike you? Does that cut you up? Well, virtual cadavers do exist through the Anatomage Table.

The Anatomage Table provides unique 3D visualisations of real patient anatomy, complementing cadaveric dissection and radiology integration into the classroom. The1-to-1 life-size visualisations of 3D anatomy are based on real patient data.

If you own a smart phone or a tablet, and are familiar with apps that require you to touch, swipe, tap and pinch, then imagine the Anatomage as one life-size tablet with a human anatomy app.

Combining CT imaging with the traditional operating room experience and delivering unparalleled anatomical images, the Table allows Anatomy students to visualise skeletal tissues, muscles, organs and soft tissue. These various tissues and views can be customised by virtually slicing, layering, and segmenting the anatomy.

Students can cut the body, peel off soft tissue or remove an organ with their fingers, and unlike real cadavers, the students can redo and undo the dissection again and again.

As Jack Choi, the founder and CEO of Anatomage Inc., said during a recent TED talk, “Oops! … You don’t want to hear ‘oops’ in real surgery.”

The operating table form facilitates both independent and group studies. Its touchscreen technology is an intuitive way to help students understand surgical procedures, review cases, or educate patients. Whether a radiologist is showing a case to a surgeon or a full team of specialists is reviewing a case together, it’s an easy and highly effective communication tool.

Instructors and students can virtually dissect skeletal tissues, muscles, and organs – together or individually. When it comes revolutionizing medical education, this will open up new methods of collaboration between doctors that were never before possible.
