A UK-based study reveals that patients suffering from depression are often deficient in B vitamins. Vitamin B12 alone has long been associated with improved neurological functions as well as mood enhancement.

The new study conducted by The MRC Neuropsychiatric Research Laboratory of Epsom reinforces the connection between feelings of gloom and B12 deficiency. Majority of patients who suffered from depression symptoms were low in both folate and vitamin B12, and did not respond as well to treatment compared to those with normal levels of the vitamins. Low levels of vitamin B12 can occur due to diet, alcoholism or other condition that hampers the absorption of the vitamin. Milk, fish, beef, chicken and eggs are sources of vitamin B12. Alternatively, vegans can benefit from vitamin b-12 shots administered twice per week.
