The Managing Director of Zambello Japan, Mr. Masayuki Ebihara observed a demand fall in the domestic plastics industry. At IPF 2017, he also admitted that this is a critical time for the company given strong competitions from foreign companies, as well as shift in key manufacturing regions. But it is a great opportunity for Zambello at the same time to promote its high-end gearboxes, as the IPF is an ideal platform to distinguish the company’s quality and value-prone position to the other competitors. Mr. Ebihara identified three key global trends that are changing the face of the plastics industry. First, an increasing number of plastics machine builders are producing their own gearboxes. Second, Japanese customer (e.g. leading companies like Toshiba) mostly request customized gearboxes. Third, the global regional share of where the end customers come from is shifting (from Japan to China). Given all these reasons, “The scenario for Zambello’s global strategy has become more complex” said Mr. Ebihara.

Zambello is trying to sell more standardized gearboxes, but at the same time designing tailored gearboxes for clients in Japan. Furthermore, although the net demand decreases domestically, the needs of customers’ end-market soar overseas, especially in China - meaning a geographic shift of end-demands. In short, Mr. Ebihara said that in the year 2017, Zambello’s overall performance is in fact positive – a solid 30% growth in Italy, and positive growth in Japan.
