Zoomlion: Building a system across independent organisations

Changsha Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Development Co. Ltd is one of the leading brands in China’s heavy industries. Information Department Director Mr. Zhang Feiqing, talks to International Metalworking News for Asia (IMNA) and other journalists all over Asia, about the company's globalisation plan for the Chinese enterprises with the help of Product Lifecycle Management software (PLM) and their strong capabilities in R&D, during Siemens PLM's Teamcenter 9 official launch in Quingdao China.

IMNA: Tell us something about Zoomlion.

Zhang: Zoomlion is established in 1992 and is mainly engaged in the R&D and manufacturing of advanced technologies and equipment for key infrastructure construction projects, including construction engineering, energy engineering, environment engineering and transportation engineering projects. Before that Zoomlion used to be the research institute for the construction machinery under the Ministry of Construction. At the beginning, we only had eight technicians/engineers, and we borrowed Rmb500,000 (US$78,907.2) to set up this institute. In 2001 after 20 years, we have reached the revenue of about Rmb85 billion.

Our strategy was implemented in two stages: The first stage was product group orientation: setting up a product-based group. The second stage, included acquisition and merger of leading brands in order to set up their footprint of worldwide coverage. Also, we started from a product group to go global, and then the last stage is to make the whole corporation international and worldwide.

IMNA: Why use PLM?

Zhang: As you know, the construction machinery industry is competitive. So in order to be on top of the pack and be in the leading position among our peers in this industry, we have to take the following factors into account: leading/advanced technology, stability, quality and excellent service brand.
