The presence of Budenheim at this year’s CHINAPLAS in Shenzhen serves to highlight the company’s innovative products, specifically engineering plastics geared toward the e-mobility trends. Dr. Urs Geisel, Senior Vice President of Sales of Budenheim, shares with the Ringier Trade Media Editorial Team the diverse applications of Budenheim’s material science solutions for the Chinese market.

In the era of energy transformation with sustainable focus, electrification with energy coming from renewable sources plays an important role in many market segments involving diverse applications that include but not limited to e-mobility, green energy development, and safe and stable power grid connection. As Dr. Geisel outlined: “In the field of e-mobility, charging efficiency has become a decisive factor for end users when choosing electric vehicles (EVs). To meet this demand, EV manufacturers are increasingly focusing on fast-charging technologies by implementing higher voltages and larger battery capacities, both aimed at reducing charging times and improving the overall user experience.”

As mentioned by Dr. Geisel, a key challenge in the growing adoption of EVs is the fast charging of EV batteries. While cables and metal components are generally well-suited to withstand high-voltage environments, the same cannot always be said for connectors, switches, and relays made from engineering plastics, especially at voltage levels of 600 volts and above.

“That’s why we showcased our latest innovation, BUDIT® T31 - a solution that enhances the Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) of engineering plastics such as PA, PBT, and PPO. This improvement enables plastic components to better withstand high-voltage conditions during defined charging scenarios,” explained Dr. Geisel.

BUDIT® T31 enables Budenheim to meet its customers’ demands for components used in high-voltage fast-charging environment. The solution supports enhanced product performance and quality, while also offering a more sustainable alternative compared to conventional materials – positioning the company to grow alongside the global e-mobility trend.

Meeting stringent standards through strong Innovation and Application Development

Budenheim remains strongly committed to its sustainability goals. The company actively works to eliminate harmful substances from its own solutions or supports customers in doing so by offering safer alternatives or minimizing hazardous properties through product redesign and composition optimization. This approach ensures consistent performance and quality while maintaining a strong focus on environmental friendliness.

Budenheim is currently placing particular emphasis on CMR-free and melamine-free solutions, as well as on reducing its carbon footprint. These priorities are driven not by regulatory pressure alone – such as potential future carbon tariffs, but by the company’s own long-standing sustainability goals.

“These priorities form the backbone of our innovation process,” Dr. Geisel explained. “Every new product concept is developed with sustainability in mind – from the use of safer raw materials to reduced energy consumption during production. We evaluate whether these factors not only lower our carbon footprint but also offer potential benefits to customers, such as long-term cost savings. This commitment extends all the way to our packaging and logistics, where we aim to provide economically and ecologically sustainable solutions.

Opportunities in emerging industries

As a supplier of advanced material solutions positioned at the upper end of the value chain, Budenheim identifies opportunities across a broad range of applications, particularly where performance, energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability are key drivers.

For instance, many industry players are working to reduce the risk of traffic accidents, yet future events remain unpredictable, and some level of risk will always exist. “What Budenheim can contribute,” explained Dr. Geisel, “is to help minimize the impact of such incidents and create safety margins in the event pf serious accidents. Our existing portfolio of halogen-free flame retardants supports downstream manufacturers in designing safer and more sustainable products, most notably in the electric vehicle sector.”

In addition to EV or relevant applications, sectors such as low altitude aerial systems (like drones and related technologies)  and robotics place particularly high demands on materials. They must be both robust and lightweight to ensure energy efficiency, agility, and stability. Recognizing this, Budenheim has developed a dedicated foaming portfolio to support the growing need for lightweight solutions. These materials are suitable for use in low-altitude systems, robotics, and EV – all with the goal of enhancing energy efficiency.

There are additional application areas where Budenheim may not appear directly relevant at first glance. However, when it comes to addressing specific technical requirements or supporting major trends like energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability, Budenheim actively contributes to driving innovation. The company remains committed to developing effective, eco-friendly solutions that help enable the transformation across a wide range of industries, including, but not limited to, those mentioned above.

Strategic position through localized services

Despite ongoing uncertainties ranging from economic policies to geopolitical disruptions, as well as increasingly strict environmental regulations, the global manufacturing sector is expected to continue growing, albeit though diverse and region-specific pathways. In response, Budenheim is pursuing a globally balanced manufacturing footprint to remain resilient and responsive across all key markets.

As Dr. Geisel explained: “China is a leading market across various industrial sectors, including EVs, IoT, and others many of which are already partially or either partly or fully integrated along the supply and value chain. Given the strategic importance of the Chinese market, Budenheim has invested significant resources in the region and will further expand its technical capabilities to support local customers with in-depth application know-how and customized formulations.”
